Just Keep Swimming
How To Feel Like You’re Doing Something Right
Do you ever try so hard at something that it consumes you? Are you constantly channeling your inner Dory and reminding yourself to “Just Keep Swimming”. This is me right now. And Dory has been in my ear for the last three months.
I am trying to get promoted at my company. It’s a task that I never imagined could be so difficult. It’s a funny thing, really. I’m sure you know those people out there at work who complain, but don’t do anything to fix what they are complaining about.
So, what would the alternative be? How about creating an action plan for improvements? But what if that doesn’t get the attention you crave? Is the alternative to just not react to anything at all? Just carry-on as if everything is going wonderfully?
I suggest finding something that you can fix. This will help you to feel more accomplished. For me, I started with my kitchen sink.
I know this sounds silly, but for months, my kitchen sink has been a source of stress. There is always a dish in the sink. And that dish always invites friends.
Before I knew it, I’d have a whole sink of dishes waiting to be washed before bed. My husband and I committed to not putting ANY dishes in the sink - not even a fork!
We have been going strong for five days. The sink is spotless, and all the dishes are in their respective homes or the dishwasher. I feel so accomplished! We implemented a plan, and it is working!
So work is still tough. But I was able to find another challenge to overcome outside of work.
Since the beginning of the school year, I have been having a tough time getting my son to want to go to preschool. This is a source of a ton of stress in the morning. The other day, I decided that he can only take one of his normal seven things to preschool. I made him choose between boppy pillow, transformer guy, race car, pink stuffed animal, kitty cat, and green blankie. I told him ONE ITEM!
He chose transformer guy. And you know what? All was just fine at drop off! And, I had an extra hand since I wasn’t carrying his entire bedroom with me.
So, can you see what I’m getting at here? If you are trying to move mountains, but the mountains are not going anywhere, do other things in your life that will remind you that you can be successful if you put your mind and efforts towards something new or different.
And if you are trying for that promotion, don’t give up yet. Giving up is easy, and it not the result that you want from all of your efforts. Just. Keep Swimming.
