How many pounds of clothing do you think you throw away each year? Have you ever thought about the environmental impact of the textile industry? Fast fashion is taxing on our environment, especially since the average American throws away 65 pounds of clothing per year. Over the years, I have focused more on bringing in quality pieces into my wardrobe. Today, I focus on seeking out quality pieces that I know I will be able to wear for many years. I will spend a little more on my clothes to build a wardrobe of pieces that I truly like and won't tire of quickly.
Starch Slides is a fabulous shoe brand that I have gotten to know that takes unwanted shirts and upcycles them into wearable slides. This type of business model works to reduce textile waste that we are accumulating rapidly on our planet. Each shirt can make one pair of small slides, two mediums, and one large. This means that your Starch Slides are extremely unique, because once this exact pattern is gone, it's GONE! The sole is made from eco-friendly materials, and they come shipped in a raw jute (natural plant fiber) backpack.
The founder of Starch Slides, Shannon Crowley, has a passion for sustainable fashion. She became very aware of textile waste while working in retail buying and management in NYC. She knew that there surely was a way to utilize this material. This is when Starch Slides was born.
I will have these slides for years to come. Their design is timeless. They are fun, fresh, comfortable, and meticulously made. There are so many fun patterns to choose from.
I admire any company working to reduce or eliminate their footprint (or the footprint of others!) We need to all consciously be aware of our environment as we go though life. Now that I have a son, I am more aware than ever of how it is up to us to leave a clean, healthy planet for our children. Being green starts with REDUCING what we consume. Next step is to REUSE what we already have. The last resort is to RECYCLE what we have used. If we all work together, we can make a big impact!
