Sleep. We all want more of it. Recently, my husband and I got a major bed upgrade. We spend 1/3 of our lives in bed - okay......maybe 1/5, if we are lucky! But let's talk about making that 1/5 more like a 1/3. Here are 5 Steps to Getting The Best Sleep Possible As a New Parent.
1) On Sunday night, declare two nights during the upcoming week that you will "go to bed early".
Planning in advance will be very helpful, and will make you more successful in getting more sleep - at least a few nights per week. I often find myself going to bed very late, and then waking up at 5:45 a.m. and thinking "TONIGHT I'm going to bed early!" But I never do....And I repeat this every night! However, I started to say to myself that I'm "going to bed early on Tuesday night and Thursday night". And I do just that. The small successes help me to achieve more sleep!
2) Have a warm, caffeine-free beverage at night.
The is a calming technique that I use. Sometimes it is as simple as a warm glass of water (I have NEVER been a fan of cold water). Chamomile tea is another favorite!
3) Do a chore in the morning before work (or before the kids get up) that you typically save for at night.
For example, I usually fold laundry at night. The mountain stares at me until I finally get to it at 11:30 p.m. or so. However, if I do it first thing in the morning, then it is a weight off of my shoulder. I can usually get to bed earlier when I check things off my list earlier in the day.
4) Update your planner/journal.
I love keeping a food journal and a meal planner. Updating it in the evening provides me closure for the day. Reviewing my meal planner keeps my mind organized (well, more organized than it would be without my planner!) I like going into the following day with a firm plan on what I will be preparing for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This type of routine helps me to sleep more soundly at night.

We all have our nighttime routines.
