Why We Let Our Toddler Sleep In Our Bed
At one point, we had more control over this situation. There was a moment in time where we could convince our 3 1/2-year-old son that it was only on weekends that he could sleep in our bed. Weekends soon turned into Thursday-Saturday, which soon turned into Wednesday-Sunday. Before we knew it, our three-year-old son was spending every night sleeping in our bed.
I used to be one of those people who declared that my kids would NEVER sleep in my bed. I remember my high school anatomy teacher telling our class about the struggles she was having with her six year old daughter who would not sleep in her own bed. At 17 years old, I thought she was a fool for ever allowing her daughter to sleep in her bed in the first place.
So naturally, I am now in a situation we I have a full-time toddler sleeping in MY bed. It has been two full months since our son has spend a night in his own bed. We always start the evening off trying to get him to sleep in his own bed, but he always wins. He always ends up in our bed.
Both my husband and I decided not to fight it at this point. What’s the harm anyways? If’s not like he will want to sleep with us forever. For now, it is his safe and comfortable spot. At three-years-old, our toddlers are still so young and fragile. Hopefully his habit won’t last YEARS. But if it does, would it be the worst thing?
My husband likes to joke that soon we will have both kids in our bed every night. And that may be true, but I’m certainly not worried about it.
