We adopted Hopper in 2020. He was being fostered by a family friend, who told us he was a very sweet, calm boy and would make an excellent pet for a family with kids. She was right!
We were told he was between 1 and 3 years old when we adopted him. However, he always acted and behaved like he was much older. We wanted to pinpoint his age more accurately, so we purchased an Embark Dog Age Test kit to see what results we would get.
The Embark Dog Age Test estimates your dog’s calendar age and birthday by measuring DNA methylation. According to Embark, 77% of dogs have a true birthday within 12 months of the estimate generated by the test. We thought Hopper could be anywhere from 7 to 12 years old, so we decided the test was worth it for us.
The kit was easy to use. And Hopper was very good for his doggy cheek swab.
The instructions said the test kit could take up to five weeks to complete. I mailed the kit on September 28, and the results came back on October 19—just three weeks instead of the estimated five! So, if you're wondering, “How long will it take to get my dog's age test results back from Embark?” based on our experience, expect about 3–5 weeks.
We downloaded the Embark app, which let us track the stage of the testing process, from sample processing to analysis and results reporting. I received a notification when the kit arrived at the processing facility and another when the sample was being analyzed.
In the meantime, I submitted images to AI to get an age estimate (NO images were submitted to Embark; only Hopper's DNA sample was sent). I wanted to test how far AI has come and planned to compare Embark's DNA methylation results with the AI-generated estimate.
AI gave the estimate of 9 years, 3 months for Hopper. I was excited to see the results from Embark.
Like anyone waiting on results from any type test, I ran to the app to get the results. Drum roll, please……………..
The Embark Dog Age Test came up with the EXACT SAME age estimate as AI did using images alone. Wow! I was genuinely surprised that the two estimates aligned so perfectly. Happy birthday, Hopper! We finally know when to celebrate!
