What little kid doesn’t want a construction zone cake at some point in their life?! Between the colorful dump trucks, excavators, and bulldozers they see in their favorite books and cartoons, it’s no wonder this theme is such a hit with toddlers and young kids!

My mom was tasked with making a construction zone dessert for my nephew’s 4th birthday, and let’s just say, she doesn’t do anything halfway when it comes to cake decorating! We knew she would come up with something fantastic. I asked her to take photos of every step along the way so I could share this fun DIY construction cake with you.

Whether you’re planning a birthday party for a little boy or girl, this construction zone cake is a fun centerpiece that will have everyone ready to DIG IN! Below is a step by step tutorial on how to make a construction zone birthday cake.

Start by grabbing a piece of plywood to use as the base for your cake. Don’t feel like making your own? All good! You can purchase a pack of scalloped-edge cardboard cake boards on Amazon instead (see below).

Start by grabbing a piece of plywood to use as the base of your cake. Pictures is the sheet of plywood.

Cover your plywood with kraft paper to create a clean surface for your cake to sit on. This also gives the cake board a nice, finished look that fits perfectly with the construction zone theme!

Cover your plywood with kraft paper. This is the surface the cake will sit on.

Next up, bake your chocolate cake! Why chocolate? Because it’s the perfect dirt color for your construction zone theme. Make two of these - one is needed for the top layer and to crumble to make “cake dirt”.

Look carefully at the image below, and take your second chocolate sheet cake and make the shape you see on top left side of the cake. Fix it on with frosting. For the bottom cake layer, flip it upside down to give a flat surface for you to work with.

The first cut to make for your construction zone cake. This cake is two layers and has a cutout where a digger would dig.

Frost the entire construction zone cake with frosting. Note below how much more like a dig zone the cake looks. She also staged her construction pieces around the cake at this time. You will want to strategically place each piece in a way that is spread out on and around the cake.

Add crumbled chocolate cake to make the cake look more like dirt.

Next step is to frost the cake. This will make it look like a big digging zone.
