Avoid These Two Major Mistakes When Buying Bathroom Vanity Mirrors

How To Select A Bathroom Vanity Mirror That Is Best For Your Space

How hard can it be to choose a bathroom vanity mirror? Well let me tell you, it's difficult! Buying mirrors was one of the very last things that we needed to do for our bathroom. I went to several of our local home improvement stores and could not find mirrors that I liked or mirrors that were the correct size. I started to search online, and in no time, I found THE mirrors.

Tap Below Image for price on Amazon:

They were Vintage Pivot Mirrors from Pottery Barn, and since they were online, I had to buy them sight unseen. I liked the photo on their website so much, I figured this was a no-brainer.

The following are the mirrors in this post from Pottery Barn:

When they arrived, I brought them over to the house and gave my husband the go-ahead to install (without seeing them out of the boxes they were shipped in).

I went to see them as soon as they were installed. I was so excited. This is what I saw:

Do you see what’s wrong? Look closely. The tilt on the mirror hits the back of the faucet!

I told myself in my head that I loved them. I tried to convince myself that they were perfect. I mean, I had found them, ordered them, received them, brought them to the house, and my husband installed them. The last thing that I wanted to do was decide that I didn't like them and send them back for new ones.

I mean, so what that the pivot function didn't work because the mirrors hit our faucets? I wasn't going to let that bother me......

And so what if they were too narrow? I could totally live with narrow mirrors and mirrors that whacked the faucets.

No, I couldn't!! I HAD to have my husband uninstall these, pack them back up, and then take them back myself to Pottery Barn with two kids in tow.....

What an ordeal! Pottery Barn made the exchange as easy as pie. I soon selected mirrors from their store that complemented our Newport 365 Bronwen Widespread Faucets just as I hoped they would.

I chose a design very similar to the ones that I had just returned. Originally, we ordered the vintage pivot, but I exchanged them for a vintage fixed in a satin nickel finish. They were the same height, but a few inches wider (major score since they covered the holes in the wall from the first round of mirrors) and they did NOT hit our Newport 365 Bronwen Widespread Faucets

TA-DA!!!! Much much better. See how this subtle change makes a huge difference?

The mirrors that were all wrong for our space are on the left, and the new mirror is on the right.

My two biggest tips when choosing mirrors for a bathroom are:

1) Make sure the mirrors are wide enough for your vanity. Choose a mirror that spans wider than your light fixture to balance the space (especially if you have a wide sink top).

2) Make sure any of the mirror features do not obstruct your faucets. (i.e. a pivot function that can't pivot because of your faucet)

In the realm of bathroom design, mirrors serve as both practical necessities and stylish focal points. A well-chosen mirror can elevate your bathroom's overall aesthetic while providing essential reflection space. Here's your guide to selecting mirrors that seamlessly blend functionality and style for your bathroom vanity:

  1. Size and Proportions: Begin by evaluating your vanity's dimensions and available wall space. Opt for a mirror that complements the vanity's size, ideally slightly narrower than the vanity itself. This balanced proportion creates an appealing visual composition.

  2. Reflect Your Style: Align your mirror's frame or shape with your bathroom's theme. Harmonize with existing design elements like colors, cabinetry, and hardware, whether you lean toward modern, classic, or minimalist aesthetics.

  3. Lighting Considerations: Proper lighting is crucial for effective mirrors. Choose fixtures like side-mounted sconces or vanity lights on either side of the mirror to ensure even illumination without casting shadows. Integrated lighting options offer added practicality and elegance.

  4. Practical Features: Decide on mirror features that cater to your needs. Opt for magnification for close-up tasks, integrated defoggers, touchless controls, or adjustable tilt angles based on your preferences.

  5. Frame and Finish: Select a frame or finish that complements your bathroom's ambiance. Frameless mirrors offer a sleek look, while framed mirrors add depth and dimension. Prioritize moisture-resistant materials.

  6. Quality and Durability: Invest in high-quality mirrors built to withstand the bathroom's humid environment. Look for sturdy construction, properly sealed edges, and a clear, distortion-free reflective surface.

By thoughtfully considering these factors, you'll be equipped to choose mirrors that seamlessly integrate with your bathroom's design, provide practical reflection spaces, and enhance your daily grooming routine. Elevate your bathroom vanity with mirrors that strike the perfect balance between functionality and style.
