And How to Use AI to Create a New Look For a Room In Your House
Have you ever had a vision for a room in your house but struggled to picture exactly how it would come together? Maybe you're thinking about a new paint color, different furniture, updated lighting, or a complete room makeover. You know what you want it to feel like, but getting from the idea in your head to an actual design can be a challenge.
This is where AI can be incredibly helpful! Love it or hate AI, you have to admit - it can be a very helpful tool for a variety of applications.
One of my favorite ways to use AI is to create visual mockups of a room before making any big decorating decisions. Instead of scrolling Pinterest for hours, saving hundreds of inspiration photos, and still wondering what everything will look like in your house, you can use AI to generate a vision using a photo of your actual space.
And that's exactly what I'm doing with our primary bedroom!
Eight Years in Our House, and One Room Still Needs Some Love
We moved into our house in the spring of 2018. The house was ready, but the final touches hadn't quite come together yet. We intentionally didn't rush into decorating for a couple of reasons.
First, we were pretty tight on cash after building the house. Second, I think rushing to decorate can lead to snap decisions that you end up wanting to replace a few years later. I wanted to take our time, figure out what we liked, and make thoughtful choices as we went.
Fast-forward eight years, and most of our home has come together. But my bedroom? Well, it's still pretty bare. And sort of messy…
The biggest issue isn't that I don't know what I want. It's that I have a very specific vision for how I want the room to look and feel, but I haven't made the time to bring it to life.
It's also a pretty big project. I've gone back and forth between painting the room myself and hiring someone to do it. Because I want the paint taken all the way up to our vaulted ceilings, I'm thinking it's probably in my best interest to hire this one out.
And that brings me to a little story about why I no longer underestimate a painting project.
The $12,000 Painting Mistake I Won't Make Again
When we were building our house, we had a $6,000 allowance for whole-house painting included in the build. We decided we could save some money by doing the painting ourselves, so I asked the builder to remove that cost.
We bought all the paint and supplies for a whole-house DIY painting adventure. I even recruited family members to come over and help. They were willing participants, although a few had already self-declared themselves terrible painters. I was optimistic. How hard could it be?
Well, after a few hours, the entire house was starting to look…terrible!
I started painting the stairs and immediately realized I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I also realized this project was going to take approximately forever.
I ended up firing the family and myself that day (you should have seen some of our work!) and calling our builder. Thankfully, he was able to get professional painters in the very next day.
The catch? It ended up costing us about twice as much as it would have if we'd just left the original $6,000 painting allowance in the build.
Lesson learned. Some DIY projects are worth tackling yourself. Others are worth paying a professional to do right the first time.
The family and I can laugh about that painting disaster now, but I have no intention of repeating it!
Why I'm Ready for a Darker, Moodier Bedroom
Looking back, I think we went a little too light with the paint colors throughout our house. Dare I say it…we had a little millennial gray moment in several rooms.
Over the years, we've started making bolder choices. My husband repainted the first floor in a beautiful, very dark blue. I also painted our first-floor bathroom a moody jade color, and I absolutely love how it turned out.
Every time we go darker with paint, I love the result even more!
Now I want to bring that same feeling into our bedroom. I'm picturing a dark, moody, cozy space that feels comfortable and inviting. A room that makes you want to crawl into bed, turn down the lights, and stay awhile.
I have ideas for the paint, the overall atmosphere, and the finishing touches. But before I hire a painter or start buying anything, I wanted to see what the room could actually look like.
Enter AI.
How to Use AI to Visualize a Room Makeover
You don't need to be an interior designer or know how to use complicated design software to get started. You can use an AI image tool like ChatGPT to help create a visual concept for your space.
Here's how I approached it.
Step 1: Take a Good Photo of Your Room
Start with a photo of the room you want to update. Ideally, take a picture that captures as much of the space as possible.
A few tips:
Stand in a corner or doorway to capture a wider view.
Take photos during the day so the room is well lit.
Include the architectural details you want to preserve, such as windows, vaulted ceilings, built-ins, or fireplaces.
Take multiple photos from different angles if the room is large.
The goal is to give AI a realistic starting point. The more of your actual room it can see, the easier it is to communicate what you want to change.
Step 2: Upload Your Photo to AI
Open ChatGPT or another AI image-generation tool that supports image uploads. Upload your room photo and explain what you're hoping to accomplish.
You don't need to have every detail figured out. In fact, this is a great opportunity to use AI as a brainstorming partner.
For example, you could start with a prompt like:
"Help me redesign this bedroom. I want a dark, moody, cozy atmosphere with deep blue-green walls, warm lighting, layered bedding, and comfortable textures. Keep the existing room layout, windows, and vaulted ceilings. Show me what this space could look like with a more sophisticated, finished design."
The more descriptive you are, the better direction you give the AI.
Step 3: Experiment With Different Design Ideas
This is where the fun really begins!
You can ask AI to experiment with different paint colors, furniture styles, lighting, rugs, bedding, and accessories. You can even ask it to create multiple versions of the same room.
Not sure whether you want navy, charcoal, forest green, or a deep jade? Ask AI to show you.
Want to see what the room looks like with a dramatic ceiling color or a different headboard? Try it.
You can keep refining your prompts until you get closer to the look you're imagining.
A few ideas to try:
"Show me this room with dark navy walls and warm brass accents."
"Create a cozy, moody bedroom with deep green walls and natural wood furniture."
"Keep the furniture but change the paint color, lighting, and decor."
"Give this bedroom a sophisticated hotel-inspired look."
One of the biggest benefits is that you can explore ideas you might not have considered before committing to paint, furniture, or other purchases.
Step 4: Refine the Details
Once you have a design you like, start getting more specific.
Ask AI to adjust individual elements without changing the entire room. Maybe you love the wall color but want different lighting. Maybe you want to keep your existing furniture but introduce new bedding and accessories.
You can also ask for suggestions on:
Paint color families and coordinating trim colors
Lighting styles and fixture placement
Rug sizes and furniture arrangements
Window treatments
Decorative accents and textures
Think of AI as a design brainstorming tool. It can help you narrow down your options and develop a more cohesive vision before you start spending money.
Step 5: Turn Your AI Vision Into a Real DIY Project
Once you have a mockup you love, it's time to turn that inspiration into a plan.
I recommend using your AI-generated image as a starting point, not a final shopping list or construction plan. AI images can sometimes change room proportions, invent furniture details, or show lighting and architectural features that aren't realistic.
Before making purchases or hiring a contractor:
Measure your room and furniture.
Test actual paint samples on your walls.
Confirm furniture dimensions and availability.
Check lighting requirements and electrical placement.
Get professional input for work involving vaulted ceilings, electrical changes, or other specialized installation.
You can even upload your finished AI concept and ask ChatGPT to help create a project checklist, estimate a materials budget, or organize the work into manageable steps.
The idea is to move from inspiration to an actionable plan.
My AI Bedroom Makeover: The Before and After Vision
So, what am I actually planning for our bedroom?
I've been playing around with AI-generated mockups, and I'm getting more excited every time I look at them. The designs capture exactly what I've been imagining: dark, moody walls, cozy textures, warm lighting, and a space that feels much more intentional.

The current bedroom: lots of potential, but still waiting for its makeover!

The vision: a darker, cozier bedroom that feels like a retreat.
The best part? I can see the potential in the room without having to buy a single thing yet.
The painter will need to get all the way up to our vaulted ceilings, so I'm leaning toward hiring this project out. After my $6,000 painting lesson, I think we've established that I'm not always the best person for the job!
Every time I look at these AI mockups, I want this room design NOW. I love the darker colors, the moodiness, and the feeling of comfort they create.
Hopefully, I can have this project completed by the end of the year. That's my goal, and I'm speaking it into existence!
Is AI Worth Using for Your Next Home Project?
Absolutely! Especially if you're someone who has a hard time visualizing how a room will look once everything comes together.
AI doesn't replace an interior designer, contractor, or your own personal style. But it can be a really useful tool for exploring possibilities, testing out ideas, and building confidence before committing to a home project.
Whether you're refreshing a bedroom, updating a bathroom, reimagining your living room, or planning a bigger renovation, start with a photo of your space and a few ideas.
You might be surprised by what AI can help you envision.
And who knows? Maybe seeing the possibilities is exactly the motivation you need to finally tackle that room you've been putting off for years!
