We recently adopted a pup from a local animal shelter. He is about 1-2 years old, and is the mellowest, sweetest boy and we couldn’t be happier to have him in our family. I’ve used the Wisdom Panel before to do a doggy DNA test, and when it comes to dog DNA test kits, they are one of the best.
Hopper was listed on the adoption site as a “hound mix”. He came from Tennessee and was found roaming the streets all alone. He did not have a microchip or a collar. He was a total stray. Lucky for us, a rescue group took him in and brought him back to Illinois.
I had to know what kind of dog he was. The scientist in me made me purchase a Wisdom Panel Dog DNA test kit. I got one for my sister’s dog too. Obviously, it does not matter at all what kind of dog Hopper is, but it was very fun to find out.
The kit is easy to do. You pre-register your kit, swab your pet’s cheek, then mail in the results. The results took a few weeks, but when we got them back, we were very shocked to see that Hopper was a pure bread American Foxhound. It makes sense because he does look exactly like a foxhound when I google image search.
The statistics say that roughly a quarter of dogs in shelters are purebred dogs. We have zero preference as to if our dog is a mix-breed or a purebred, we only care that we adopt from local rescues.
Our beloved Heidi (who we lost in November 2019) turned out to be 75% German Shepherd and 25% Terrier mix. She was the most beautiful animal on earth!
As for my sister’s dog, she looks 100% Shepherd. All the dogs in our family have been adopted, so we only know so much when they come into our families. It was a big shock to my sister (in the best, most fun way possibly), when she found out their doggy daughter was a Shepherd Husky Mix. What a sweet girl she is, too!
