I love Easter. I love the energy, bunny cakes (this post from years ago still goes viral this time of year!), the colors, the warmth creeping back into the air (well, sometimes), and especially the joy of Easter baskets. There's something so sweet and generous about the tradition—whether it's grandparents putting something together for the kids or us creating our own baskets at home for our kids.
But can we talk about the sheer amount of stuff that ends up in those baskets?
If you're a parent like me, you know what I mean. Bright, cheerful baskets overflowing with plastic grass, shiny wrappers, and tiny plastic toys that break or get lost under the couch in approximately 3.7 minutes. I’m not against fun, or even a little sugar—but I’ve hit a point where I just can’t keep bringing more junk into our home. The candy overload and the dollar-bin plastic clutter—it adds up.
And yet, I still love giving a basket and of course, the kids love receiving Easter Baskets. I still want to mark the holiday with something that feels special and thoughtful. I just want it to be… different.
So I’ve started a new approach. Easter baskets that feel a little more intentional, without being boring. No candy. No plastic trinkets. Just things that spark creativity, get us outside, or help us make a memory together.
Here are 10 of my favorite Easter basket ideas that are free from sugar and plastic, but still full of fun, color, and thoughtfulness.
1. Gardening Kit for Kids
This has been a huge hit in our house. Think biodegradable peat pots, a few seed packets (flowers or herbs are great), kid-sized gloves, and a little trowel. It’s fun right away—digging in the dirt—and gives them something to tend to in the weeks to come. Bonus: no batteries required.
2. Popcorn-Making Kit
Popcorn on the stove (or by using a popcorn popper) is a tiny bit magical if you’re used to the microwave. Fill a mason jar with kernels, tuck in a little jar of coconut oil or butter, maybe a shaker of cinnamon sugar or fancy salt. You can even add a "movie night coupon" for a family evening together. What kids doesn’t LOVE making popcorn at home? And having a variety a seasonings that each family member can choose from will make movie night extra special.
3. Art Supplies (That They’ll Actually Use)
Instead of those cheap paint sets that dry out in a week, opt for watercolor paper, beeswax crayons, or a new sketchbook. Washi tape and stickers are great too. Think open-ended and creative.
4. Books, Glorious Books
Books are a classic for a reason. Whether it’s a seasonal springtime story or the next book in a series they love, it’s a perfect way to add something meaningful to the basket.
5. DIY Craft Kit
Create your own simple kit: felt sheets, embroidery thread, maybe some buttons or pom-poms. A little instruction card or a link to a tutorial, and voilà—hours of creative fun without a screen in sight. Or how about some painted pots for some of those flower seeds?
6. Nature Scavenger Hunt Set
Print out a nature scavenger hunt (or write your own), and tuck it in with a magnifying glass or a little journal and pencil. It turns an everyday walk into an adventure.
7. Mini Baking Kit
Another favorite: a jar of dry ingredients for cookies or muffins, plus cookie cutters or a tiny whisk. Wrap it up with a handwritten recipe card, and you’re good to go. It’s a great way to spend a cozy afternoon together.
8. Puzzle or Brain Teaser
Instead of plastic toys, why not something that exercises the brain? A wooden puzzle, a deck of storytelling cards, or a Rubik’s cube alternative can be surprisingly engaging.
9. Cozy Socks or Slippers
Simple, comforting, and something they'll actually wear. Spring mornings can still be chilly, and there’s something really sweet about finding a soft surprise in the basket.
10. Tickets or Coupons for Experiences
Think beyond the basket: a ticket to a local museum, a zoo pass, or even a homemade coupon for a special outing (ice cream date, hiking trail, you name it). Experiences last way longer than candy ever does.
